Outcomes of Workshop

This workshop will enable you to:

  • Understand how to teach phonics using the Balanced Language Approach
  • Differentiate between phonemic awareness and phonics
  • Interact with the entire class using practical phonemic awareness activities
  • Understand that phonemic awareness and phonics can be taught together
  • Understand that phonics is progressive across the Foundation Phase and within a grade
  • Compare the phonic requirements per grade in the Foundation Phase as stipulated in CAPS
  • Translate the required phonics into CAPS-linked activities for Grades 1-3
  • Understand the phonetic vocabulary that is taught in Grade 3
  • Know the differences between consonant digraphs, vowel digraphs and vowel and consonant blends
  • Differentiate between the different phonemic awareness skills during an assessment task
  • Assess phonics using the Balanced Language Approach
  • Differentiate between beginner, intermediate and advanced phonics activities
