The expression ‘children must learn to read in order to read to learn’ has been shown to be true. Research indicates that the gap in education outcomes grow wider throughout schooling years for those learners who cannot demonstrate basic reading skills in Grade 3. Interventions in literacy in the Foundation Phase (Grades 1 to 3) have been shown to have a particular long-term impact on academic performance.

It is with this in mind that Macmillan Education South Africa has developed a way to bring reading directly into classrooms. We have developed Reading Trolleys and Reading Corners with the aim of bolstering the reading and comprehension skills of learners.

As part of Macmillan Education’s 2016 CSI  programme we donated  Foundation Phase Reading Trolleys and  Grade 1 Reading Corners  to 20  township and rural schools across 5 provinces, positively impacting the lives of over 15 000 learners.
